Cinema at European Graduate School, Saas Fee

This week students at the European Graduate School in Saas Fee, Switzerland have been taking classes in The Cinema of Anti-capitalism with Marx Reloaded writer-director and co-producer Jason Barker. (Other seminars comprising the graduate programme this summer have been given by Judith Butler, Jacques Rancière, Avital Ronell, Jeffrey Eugenides, Giorgio Agamben, Elie During, Boris Groys, Graham Harman and Michael Schmidt). 

Jason's seminars explored Marxist-materialist, metaphysical and post-metaphysical cinema theory and practice, and included film screenings and discussions of films by Cronenberg, Mulvey and Wollen, Gidal, Godard, Vertov, Sekula and Burch, Dojo Cinéma, among others (including a special screening of Marx Reloaded). 

The seminars (12 in total) generated fascinating and stimulating discussions - thanks in large part to a superb and highly-motivated class of MA and PhD students - around questions and problems of pursuing a revolutionary cinema practice in a capitalist film industry. Today, in a world of 3D Hollywood triumphalism, is a "cinema of anti-capitalism" conceivable? What films might be described as "anti-capitalist"? Under what practical and institutional conditions can and should anti-capitalist films be made? How might a revolutionary cinema practice be conducted? According to what principles, ideologies, theories?         

Jason's cinema courses are aimed at students, artists, teachers, theoreticians, film-makers, practitioners and other workers of all persuasions and professional backgrounds, and will continue to evolve at the European Graduate School (and elsewhere) over the coming years.

Cinema of Anti-Capitalism at EGS - Latest News

Here are some final notifications relating to Jason Barker's forthcoming lectures on the Cinema of Anti-Capitalism at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland. For those due to attend the three day course, beginning on Tuesday 20 August, please note that students will be asked to present a short seminar paper on the second day, either individually or in pairs. A more detailed brief will be given in the lectures, but students should supplement existing reading for lectures 4 and 5 with the following article:

Mao Reloaded in Shanghai and Wuhan, China

From 6th-8th April Marx Reloaded director Jason Barker will be making an "intervention" at The Third Sino-British Bilateral Forum on Marxist Aesthetics. This forum is to be held in Shanghai, at the Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The title of the forum is "Marxism and the Future".

We have no information at this time regarding the details of Jason's intervention, other than it will be accompanied by a screening of Marx Reloaded. However, while in China Jason will also be speaking at The Second International Conference on Chinese Form of Marxist Literary Criticism at Central China Normal University, Wuhan. Comrades will know that Wuhan was the location of Mao's summer "retreat" during the Cultural Revolution, which he affectionately named "Home of the White Clouds and Yellow Cranes". 

We understand the (ideologically correct) title for Jason's speech in Wuhan will be "Master Signifier: Mao Tse-tung in French Theory". We trust that comrades will greet Comrade Barker's ideas with the correct degree of enthusiasm.  

Marx Reloaded DVD en Español

Marx Reloaded es un documental cultural que examina de qué modo las ideas del filósofo y socialista alemán Karl Marx pueden ayudarnos a entender la crisis económica y financiera global del 2008-2009. Dicha crisis provocó la recesión global más profunda que se había visto en setenta años e hizo que el gobierno de los Estados Unidos invirtiera más de un trillón de dólares en salvar del colapso a su sistema bancario. Todavía hoy no sabemos hasta dónde llegarán las consecuencias de esta crisis en Europa y en el resto del mundo. Pero, ¿debemos aceptar esta crisis como un desafortunado efecto secundario del libre mercado? O ¿existe otra explicación de por qué sucedió lo que sucedió y de cuáles serán sus posibles efectos en nuestra sociedad, nuestra economía y nuestra forma de vida?

Anticapitalist Cinema at European Graduate School

Marx Reloaded director Jason Barker will be giving an intensive summer course on "The Cinema of Anti-Capitalism" this coming August at the European Graduate School, Saas-Fee, Switzerland. Past and present EGS professors include Giorgio Agamben, Alain Badiou, Judith Butler, Simon Critchley, Jacques Derrida, Jean Baudrillard, Peter Greenaway, Jean-Luc Nancy, plus a handful of the contributors to Marx Reloaded, including Slavoj Zizek.

The outline at the EGS website describes the course as an exploration of "cinematic representation and crisis capitalism through mutual relations of time, space, subjectivity and revolution". Planned screenings include films by Jean-Luc Godard, Chris Marker, Noel Burch and Allan Sekula, and Alexander Kluge, whose formidable News from Ideological Antiquity is cited in Marx Reloaded. 

Great Turnout for Marx Reloaded at Miller Theatre

There was a great turnout for the Marx Reloaded screening at Miller Theatre in New York City last Monday night. 325 people had pre-registered for the event online - although clearly Hurricane Sandy and its catastrophic aftermath meant that many of those people weren't able to attend on the night. This is a shame, and we hope that those who missed out will get another (free) opportunity to see the film soon in New York. In any case, the 200 people that did attend seemed to enjoy themselves, and laughed and applauded in all the right places. 

The panel debate that followed between Frances Negron-Muntaner, Todd Gitlin, Bruno Bosteels and Jason Barker developed into a decent exploration of the usual themes: communism, socialism, capitalism, etc. (nothing too heavy for a Monday night!). Many thanks to all the panelists, and to the generous support of Columbia University, the event's sponsor, and especially to Robert Ast and his colleagues for making this such a successful and enjoyable occasion. We like New York, and we want to come back.

Marx Reloaded in New York City on 12 November

We can exclusively announce that Marx Reloaded will be showing at Miller Theatre on Monday 12 November. Miller Theatre in New York City is Manhattan's premiere venue for new music and innovative programming. It is also rather a large venue, with a capacity of around 400 seats. 

Writer-director Jason Barker is due in New York especially for this event and will join a panel debate after the film.

Update 23 Oct. Columbia have now confirmed that Bruno Bosteels (Cornell) and Stanley Aronowitz (CUNY) will join Jason Barker for the panel debate on 12 November. 

Barker & Toscano Debate Marx Reloaded in Lodz

This weekend Marx Reloaded director Jason Barker joined Alberto Toscano, one of the film's protagonists, and the philosopher Graham Harman at a conference devoted to Speculative Realism and Marx Reloaded. The three day conference was held at the Sztuki Muzeum in Lodz, Poland, and attracted an enthusiastic and highly informed audience.

  

This was an event worthy of an "Alien vs. Predator" mashup. In addition to a stimulating lecture by Graham Harman on the fiction of H. P. Lovecraft and two brilliant talks by Toscano (one on Badiou, Meillassoux and Speculative Realism, and the other on French Marxist philosophy of the 1970s) the conference was rounded off by a screening of Marx Reloaded, then discussion between Barker and Toscano on the idea of communism.

Thanks to Pawel Polit and to the staff at the Sztuki Muzeum for putting this event together.

Marx Reloaded on DVD - Universities Edition

Marx Reloaded will be available on DVD from the end of October 2012. Orders can be placed now by writing to us at our email address. 

PLEASE NOTE: since the vast majority of the inquiries we receive are from schools and universities, we are releasing a special schools and universities edition. This comes with foreign language options (in Spanish and Serbian) and around an hour's worth of bonus material. We are also aiming to stream all of the film's interviews from our website in the not too distant future, although for the moment it's just the DVD.

Marx Reloaded and Returns in Nottingham

On 24 May, Jason Barker will be introducing Marx Reloaded at the Nottingham Contemporary Art Gallery. His talk will focus on the film's animation and the challenges of representing Karl Marx as a non-fictional character. He will also be discussing his upcoming film Marx Returns and revealing previously unseen drawings from his work in progress. His talk will be followed by a screening of Marx Reloaded.

Jason's talk is part of a series at Nottingham Contemporary entitled "The Critical Currency of Caricature", and includes a discussion on 29 May with acclaimed graphic novelist - and creator of Watchmen, From Hell, and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen - Alan Moore.      

Marx Re-Reloaded in London in April

Following 14 sold out nights Marx Reloaded is back on for two extra Friday matinee screenings at the ICA in London. Tickets can be purchased online here.

Marx Reloaded at The Festival of Dangerous Ideas

It's getting a little boring to keep repeating the same script, but another "sold out" audience were good enough to attend the Marx Reloaded screening at The Festival of Dangerous Ideas in east London on Saturday. Again, our sincere thanks to the festival organizers, in this case for approaching us at a relatively late stage, and for the very kind assistance of our "technical worker" (yes, you know who you are) without whom we couldn't have got the film to the venue in time.

We will have more information on selected UK cinema screenings soon (the film returns to London in April) but in the meantime please contact us if your university is interested in showing the film and we'll see what we can do. 

Marx Reloaded Screens to Full House in Athens

We would like to take one more opportunity to thank everyone at Embros Theatre for all their work in organizing the Marx Reloaded screening on Sunday, and for making the event such a roaring success. A rough estimate suggested 130 people were in attendance (a full house) and, like all events at Embros Theatre, entry was free of charge. 

Although the facilities were far from "multiplex" (a good sign) Jason Barker said he couldn't remember a more enthusiastic audience ("They even laughed at the animation") or a more dedicated, resourceful and enthusiastic organization. Long may the precious work of Kinisi Mavili continue in exploring the creative possibilities of a genuine grassroots, community-based arts and culture project.
